Lucky me. I have been inundated with stories of death and despair these past few days. If ever there was a dog that personified the spirit of Cute with Chris, it was Happy the Beagle who had both of his eyes surgically removed, suffered from epileptic seizures, and yet spent his days gaily running into walls and eating stale potato chips he found under the seats in the back of the family mini-van. I met his owner Kristin on my recent trip to BC, and she sends this terrible news. : "...Dear Chris, It's 5:50 in the morning and I just got back from the veterinary clinic where my dog was put down an hour ago. Apparently, from 2 to 4 in the morning, he was having uncontrollable seizures and my mom took him to the vet where they advised he be euthanized as he was beyond treatment. The kicker? I upstairs, still awake in my room, completely oblivious. I didn't even get to be there when he was put down, because my mom thought I was asleep and didn't want to wake me. I know it's a cliche thing to say, but Happy was the best dog in the world. He provided the same loyalty and friendship that's customary in any dog while having his own special uniqueness paralleled by no other dog I've ever known, thus producing many entertaining stories that my family will remember forever. Even after losing his eyes and developing epilepsy, he still ran around with the energy and enthusiasm of regular dog. He was a real trooper, Chris. He will be missed. Here's a paper mache model of Happy I made in Grade 4. I would send you a new picture, but... that would be a little morose. Kristin." Needless to say, I cannot possibly post today's video in this time of mourning. I love you Happy.
You may remember Happy the Beagle from CWC episode #147. He's the dog who had to have his eyes removed due to cancer and now enjoys blindly pushing an empty corn flakes box along the floor for hours to entertain himself. I'm thrilled to report his owner Kristin lives in the VICTORIA area. She writes: "...Hey Chris! This is Kristin (owner of Happy the blind and epileptic beagle if you still remember him, I know that was awhile back) - I'm so happy to hear you're doing a show in Victoria! If it had been anywhere other than my hometown I probably wouldn't have been able to go, but lucky for me (and the two friends I introduced to the cult) you're coming at the perfect time. See you there!"
Donna from WASHINGTON writes: "...Hi Chris. I'm sad. 2 weeks ago my friend Jennifer found a lump on her beagle's neck; turned out to be lymphoma, a very aggressive cancer. He's only 3. Last week I went to her house to take pictures of him to immortalize his cuteness and today she's decided it's time to put him to sleep. My husband and I were going to have a major sex-fest this morning, but now I'm too sad. I feel sorry for Jennifer....and my husband. Donna."
