Our animal rescue was called in to help with these 3 (formerly) feral kittens. (PICTURED ON NEXT PAGE)
The 2 kittens with buttons on their eyes had severe eye infections when we got them. According to our vet, the bacteria had eaten away the protective covering over the eye.
The vet we took them too ended up sewing the eyes shut pretty much, putting a button on each eye. Veterinarians use this technique by placing one or two temporary sutures in the margin of the lid and pulling it up over the cornea. The sutures are tied over a button or piece of rubber tubing that prevents them from cutting into the upper eyelid. Apparently, this gives the eyes a chance to heal themselves. We are hoping for partial eyesight for the girl, and the boy has one good eye, so anything in the 2nd eye is a bonus.
Notice the fancy paper plate e-collars (made by foster mom's daughter), particularly Daisy’s.
